Headteacher of Sir Francis Hill Community School in Lincoln resigns following strike action

A headteacher from a primary school has left their post with immediate effect following a series of strikes earlier this year.

Gareth Nichols stepped down from his role as headteacher at Sir Francis Hill Community School in Lincoln as of Monday, October 28.

Allegations of bullying, unprofessional language, and threatening and intimidating behaviour surfaced in December, with three unions—NASUWT, the National Education Union (NEU), and UNISON—stepping in to call strike action.

The first picket line was held outside the school on Bristol Drive in April, with further strikes continuing until an agreement was reached in early June.

Lincolnshire County Council indicated that the suspension of industrial action followed "productive conversations between the school and unions".

In a letter sent to parents and seen by reporters, Mr Nichols refuted the allegations, including those on social media, but believed it was in the best interest of those concerned for him to leave the position.

He wrote: "I have made the decision to leave my post as headteacher at Sir Francis Hill Community Primary School with immediate effect. As everyone is no doubt aware, it has been a very difficult period for me and my family.

"While I totally refute the allegations that have been made, including those on social media, I believe it is now in the best interest of all concerned if I leave my role at the school, allowing everyone to move forwards.

"Over the last six and a half years, I have worked tirelessly to bring about considerable improvements within the school and I am immensly proud of all the pupls and their numerous achievements. I would liek to thank all those who have shown their support during my headship."

A spokesperson for the school confirmed the news, adding: "Gareth Nichols has decided to leave his post as headteacher at Lincoln Sir Francis Hill Primary School with immediate effect. We would like to take this opportunity to thank him for his years’ service at the school and wish him all the best in the future."

Lincolnshire County Council was approached for comment but had nothing to add.
