Stamford Women progressed into the next round of the RFU Papa Johns Community Cup after narrowly defeating Coalville Ladies 12-7 in the second round of the competition on Sunday.

In the first half, Stamford's dominance was quite apparent as, for most of it, they kept Coalville in their own half and were constantly making forays towards the home team's try line.

Unfortunately, these runs were not converted into tries and points and Stamford found themselves penalised on multiple occasions after apparently committing infringements.

While Stamford’s pack were stuck in 'go forward' mode, it was the golden boot of the unflappable Daisy Attley that took the visitors into the lead with two pinpoint penalty kicks to lead 6-0 at half-time.

Stamford’s dominance in the first half was a collective effort but mentions should go to Chantelle Miller and Emily Russell for their strong ball carrying and their ability to fend off multiple opposition members.

However, from the start of the second half, Coalville found their second wind and started to push Stamford back into their own half and had several darting runs.

This pressure eventually turned into a well taken try and subsequent conversion to put the home side in the lead.

Despite this minor setback, Stamford continued with their incursions into the Coalville half and were well rewarded with two penalties near enough to the home uprights for dazzling Attley to slot through the posts and give the purple, black and whites a winning scoreline.

Despite not scoring any tries and being reliant on Attley's kicking feats, Stamford executed a well-rounded whole team performance and were deserved winners.

Special mentions and thanks should go to loanee Jess Pearce who unfortunately sustained an injury during the first half and speedster Gemma Jones in her last game before travelling Down Under.

Stamford now face a long trip to Staffordshire to take on Cannock Lionesses in the next round.
